Talking about animals

When they say that the human being is the only being that stumbles over the same stone twice, they are really right. Unfortunately at Scooby we still encounter cases of animal abuse and therefore we still report them. The last case we came upon was about an older podenco female, blind, undernourished and with a lot of problems caused by the fact that her owners abandoned her, together with not being able to identify her by chip as required legally, not knowing if she had received any shots or treatment. But what calls our attention is the mistress, a week after the podenca has been picked up, she gets into touch with us to collect her. Why?? To prevent us from finding out and what a vet had confirmed? No madam, things are not like that, you have to be responsible of your own actions and you will have to explain the why and how.
But the most infuriating are the people that without knowing the reasons why this happened nor exactly what happened, are badmouthing Scooby in this case, with the only objective to slander and twist the truth.  And we don’t accept that because Scooby is made up of a lot of people for whom the only goal is to end abandonment and abuse and they fight daily to get that done, and then later on they are confronted with a stained image of a shelter that has been working for over 25 years for the good of animals.  SCOOBY does not allow and will not allow anybody attacking us, not for us but for the hundreds of animals that depend on our work.  Transparent work that anyone that knows us can see and judge for themselves. Scooby does not need to justify themselves, we do our job, our passion, what our hearts and head tell us to do without bothering anybody.  Not everybody can say the same, we can and LOUDLY. Because of this and a lot of other things we have decided to take measures and we are not going to allow that anybody talks bad about us.

Pipa´s silent world

PIPA  was found wandering next to a road, lost and exhausted. A couple saved her and took her to Scooby in April .It was clear that there was something wrong…PIPA is deaf .And some months later she started having epileptic fits(not very frequent or strong but…).So life in a shelter is very difficult for her. She lives with the most quiet group, the oldies, but any new dog arriving, any change confuses her a lot. Sometimes she gets angry and sometimes she gets sad  because she doesn´t understand what´s going on… She is much attached to people and always looks for human touch; having someone near makes her feel safe. And she also likes having a close doggy friend with whom she can play and follow when she gets” lost”.

PIPA will need medicine all her life but it´s not expensive .A box of Fenobarbital(50 tablets) is not even 9€. She needs a normal life full of routines;  her epileptic fits will be much reduced in a quiet environment. And a quiet and good dog next to her will help her with her deafness.
PIPA is a wonderful dog: very affectionate and so sweet, impulsive because she is very young(born in January 2013) but docile and really, really loyal. She is very special so she needs a special family. Could it be yours???

Tigre and Trosky want to head for a new home

Today we want to bring your attention to Tigre ( at Scooby since Dec.2012) and Trosky (at Scooby since Feb. 2013) again. Both are at Scooby for more than a year and part of special paddock we tenderly call the trauma-club. This is a group of Galgos with special fears or severely traumatized.
Our 2 boys are in the group longest but meanwhile also the ones with the largest  progress in losing their fear of humans. They cheerfully greet the volunteers who take care for them and visit them on regular terms. With the same joy they take the treats we bring with us. Now we think our boys are fit to go into experienced families. Of course they still need to master some of their fears and gain trust in their new families, but once you compared the videos from 6 months ago to those from today, you will understand why we think that the time has come for them to leave Scooby and start a new life. So, experienced homes, we need your help for our 2 wonderful, affectionate and stunning beautiful boys, Trosky and Tigre, to enable them to do the last step into a normal and happy life!!

Short news

I don’t know why but it looks like everything that is coming into Scooby arrives with a gift,  we picked up a goat from Benavente and it gave us the presents Zipi and Zape, two little goats. Later on we went to Salamanca because they advised us about a sheep along the highway and it was not one, there were four. The first one could not move and we had to put her to sleep since she was run over and had a broken spine, and nobody told us about it when we got there so we were treating her, making her suffer unnecessarily because it was something that could not be solved.  Anyway, one of the other 3 came with a surprise. So now we have to little goats and a little lamb, even my niece came over and she saw them when she took a  walk around the refuge, later on we went to have lunch and she did not want to eat any lamb anymore.
Even though I normally don’t talk about my private life, now I am going to tell you something, my father was a farmer and we had sheep, so I am obviously used to seeing lambs and little goats and I have to assure you that right now I look at them completely different from  before. I can understand that for self protection as a little kid I did not want to get attached to them because I knew they were going to the slaughterhouse in the end and my feelings would get hurt so I did not interact a lot with them to protect myself, but these ones are different, I know they will have a long life ahead of them and I allow myself to love them and believe me you look at them differently.
The filly that came with a surprise package is about to give birth, she still hasn’t but she must be getting close.
The infirmary is going mostly on schedule, almost all the walls and the ceiling are finished and we took the opportunity to remodel the warehouse next to it, which we changed into a waiting room for when we open the clinic to the public and in it is a small storage room and the boiler room. You will see it because I think it will look magnificent.
We are continuing to adapt the land of my family for the horses and the other grazing animals, who, as you can see are coming in, changing our refuge into a real sanctuary. And it’s almost done.
