The sad reality for the podencos

Hunting season over, the abandonment is starting, the cruel reality that we encounter when they are no longer useful. She is Alma, a hunting dog of advanced age that no longer “served” and that was found in a state closer to dying, completely starved and without any energy to be able to stand up, with severe wounds all over her body, inflicted by beings full of hate and anger and without scruples or feeling.

She lost one of her eyes because of a heavy blow, the other one is almost blind. She was found in Salamanca by the animal protection association el Hocico, and from there she came to Scooby in Zamora where she still is.  She has a pancreas infection and has to be hooked up with a drip and medication until it becomes better, she is still critical, and when she survives she will need extra care and lots of love to make her want to go on. We still do not understand how somebody can do this to an animal and leave her to die like that.

Be strong Alma, you need to survive this, we have so many things to show you, a lot of love to give you and show you that there are still people in this world that love you and that will fight to find you a new home.

Little Bella (app. 9 years of age)

We present you Bella, and the best way to describe this little one would be one word: fighter.

When she came to the shelter she had a problem with her eyes that was easily solved with a simple operation. When we went to castrate her the operation went fine and from there she would go to a pre-adoption home, but when we went to get her, we found her in a pool of blood. We rushed her to the vet and it seemed the poor thing had a ruptured spleen so we had to wait in anguish for the operation to save her life which hung by a thread. The waiting became longer and longer, the vets did everything they could and gave her several bloodtransfusions, they really did everything for the little one.

Now we only could wait, I stayed at her side and held her little paw and only asked for her to live, that she needed to know what is it to have a home and to be happy, and that it just wasn’t right if she left this world without knowing that.

And she, the fighter that she is, managed to survive, we were all watching her, giving her all the treats and loving care in the world and little by little she held on to life. It seems that the operation has had its success and Bella recuperated. Every time she looked at you with her big eyes and moved her little tail thanking you for coming to pet her.

And now she is completely better, she has a normal life, she can run, jump and play without trouble ..and now all she really needs is a HOME!

She’s a very special little dog, she gets along well with cats and other dogs and knows how to behave at home... she only wants a little bed with her blanket, can you show her what it is to have a home?

Two Special Additions

Today we would like to acquaint you with two new members of the Scooby-family.

This little mutt was found straying in Medina. Round her neck she had a chain, which she had obviously torn when freeing herself. Collar and chain consisted of a single piece and were locked with a screw. This screw was bent, so Dani and Jero had to use some implement to cut the chain from the little darling’s neck. She suffered the entire procedure with unbelievable friendliness and patience; evidently the bitch was very relieved to get rid of the chain. Now she would like to find a nice forever home and with our combined efforts we will certainly find her a place. As always, we are counting on you.

A couple of days ago, we were called by a man who is looking after the cats in his vicinity.  He told us that there was a young cat living on the premises which belonged to his shop. Recently he had noticed that the animal was obviously ill because one of its eyes was badly swollen whereas the other one had gone all grey; now he surmised that the cat was blind or nearly blind. Since the man’s shop is situated on a busy road and the cat might be unable to orientate itself properly, he feared for its life. So he contacted Scooby and asked whether we could accommodate the little tom. Pablo and Sabine immediately went to the place where they managed to catch the cat. We were sorry to find out that the man had been right – one of the little tom’s eyes was so swollen that it almost popped out of his face and could not be mended. Therefore it was removed in our hospital, at least to alleviate his pain. The other eye is also affected and it seems that the little tom is completely blind. Right now he is quarantined so that he can get used to people and we hope for an ardent cat-lover who will give him a forever home. Even if life at Scooby is better than living in the streets, it is not an ideal place for a blind cat.

2013

A bit late but it is never too late to take stock of our work during the whole year 2013, I am not going to bore you with figures although I will have to give you some to show the reality at Scooby, so hold on to your seat because this figures will make you dizzy.

All kinds of animals rescued: over 1500, more than 1000 of them dogs, 200 chickens, horses, sheep and goats and more than 200 cats.

Animals placed in homes:  over 1000 dogs and more than 150 cats

Rescue trips = 17

We have received over 20000 calls, over 10000 emails, letters, faxes and any other means of communication you can imagine.

We have rescued galgos from almost all the doghouses that needed it, we have signed an agreement with the FEG in Castilla – Leon, trying to set up a solution for this problem from the start,

We have opened a new refuge in Zamora and we have been present on the streets advocating the right of animals on numerous occasions, in Medina, Valladolid, Zamora, Salamanca, Laguna de duero, etc. etc.

In short our work has been done tirelessly and sometimes exhausting but in the end we have to conclude that it was worth it, over 1000 happy dogs in their new home says it all, they all thank you for being there now, if Scooby didn’t exist somebody would have to invent it, proud to be part of the big family that is Scooby, volunteers, workers, adopters, followers and above all, our animals.

One weekend-54 precious lives saved

The hunting season is almost finished, and shelters quickly become full of

galgos. And when a galgo enters a Spanish shelter, he  has a very small chance to get out again.

Fortunately many people, Spanish and from abroad, strongly try to give them the

possibility, not only to come out, but to finally have a life.

A big machinery of hope.

We have received many requests for help and, as usual, we are ready to go.

That's why we left Scooby very very early on Friday morning, direction

Ciudad Real, to pick up about 30 galgos.

When we arrived, as welcome, we found a galgo at the door, very

skinny and exhausted. The volunteer told us that he was abandoned during

the night at the entrance of the refuge. So, 31 galgos.

Luckily we have taken with us all the possible cages, to be able to pick up

the largest possible number of dogs, and at the end we came back to Scooby

with a precious cargo of 34 lives.

For us, seeing the galgos running and playing and smiling, has been the biggest reward.

But why stop us?

The day after, Saturday, we wake up again early, well, to be honest not so

early like the day before, direction Merida.

We had to pick up 15 galgos, but luckily we came back home with 20.

One of them has been found right the day before by a

volunteer working in the perrera, still bleeding.

They cut out the chip from the neck and left him on the  road like trash. These persons are the shame of Spain, and the shame of the human race.

But we won for this time and again on the way back to Scooby, full of

satisfaction and joy.

We want to share our emotions with you, with these images, 54 new lifes at Scooby.

Please help us to close the circle and find them a final home and the

future that they deserve.
