MISTER BROWN

Hello, my name is Mr Brown and I am a young galgo.  I do not remember when I was born, but as I have heard from some humans, I must be around 12 or 14 months old.
When I came to the shelter I had a little cough, so I spent 15 days in a halfway house to recover. I lived there with two other dogs and two cats and all of us got along very well.
The people I was with in the halfway house said that I am a very special galgo because when I walk, I do it with my tail curled up and moving it from side to side to express my joy. They also say that I am a very sociable dog, loving and obedient and not very skittish for a galgo.
Now I am looking for a home where I can be happy for the rest of my life. I have heard I have a good chance of ending up living in a different European country. I hope that this is true, because I've always wanted to learn other languages and this could be a great opportunity!

Lula, a spectacular cat

I am going to present you Lula, who came to us a few months ago with a very strange disease; eveytime she poops by some defect a part of her intestines comes out, it appears that she does not have an anal sphincter that would hold it in, so we had to make sure she would have continuous diarrhea to avoid her having to strain while pooping, if she had to strain just a bit her intestine would come out and we would have to operate her to put it back in.
The solution is, as you can imagine, difficult but is available, we are going to make her an anus and implant it, it’s a very complicated and expensive operation which they are going to do in the veterinary faculty of the University of Zaragoza, we have already send her there and it could very well be that while I am writing this, she is already being operated on, we hope that everything works out but if not at least we tried.
To be able to do things like this, which are really miracles in the world of animal protection, we need your constant help, if you really want us to go on doing this, your help is essential, help us find a home for Lula after her operation, any help is necessary.
Greetings, Fermin

Hmm.. interesting

They inspect us, and we walk, they denounce us and we walk, what nonsense do we have to hear and be taken for fools. Now, after more than 10 years that our pictures are posted on the web, now it is causing an alarm and you have to kill the messenger or at least try to make our life more difficult. Those people are wrong in thinking that way because opposition only makes me stronger and more determined, I will not be intimidated and we will keep on reporting all the cases of animal neglect and abuse that we know about and as authorities it is their responsibility to ensure that this scar in our society comes to an end. If by any chance somebody up there reads this article and wants to do something useful, it is very simple, the only thing that they need to do is to uphold the law, that all animals can be identified after being 3 months old, make sure that dangerous animals are being registered,  that the hunters have less than 5 dogs and if they have more, ensure that they have a license, check on these ethnic minorities that keep their animals in a very sorry state and so on, in short do their work and refrain from trying to intimidate a group of people that is trying to do the best possible job with the limited means they have. That day will come, one day we will be Europe, for the moment we are still being the northern part of Africa. Greetings, Fermin

Here comes Spring

Even though temperatures don’t feel like it, Spring is on its way, as you can see with our birds, busying themselves with their nests, and though we have a tendency to take away the eggs all the time, sometimes some birds succeed in keeping some stoleaways, as happened with our ducks the other day, succesfully hiding 12 ducklings, few of which will survive as they are easily killed by birds of prey.  Spring is coming as can be seen with our geese who are fighting among themselves to win the favours of a female, and who become quite aggressive sometimes in their attempts to guard their family. Spring is coming with millions of abandoned galgos in all the shelters, you saw the volumes we already took in but still there are more and more coming, all abandoned, white, black, brindle, males females as to us there is no distinction whatsoever, they are all precious to us, each and every life counts, and now we need your voice because Scooby is filled to the brim with dogs ready to be adopted and all of this is because Spring is coming, kisses, nibbles and licks from the dogs for everyone.  Fermín

What is NOT the purpose of an animal protection with refuge or at least it should not be.

It does not serve as a warehouse of animals, animals are living beings and all need a home.
It does not serve as a breeding ground for animals by joining males and females, the homes that take in puppies cannot be used as homes to place any adult that has not asked to be born and that got to us because of somebody’s senseless doing.  Fundamental issues are sterilization and castration, also when some female arrives here pregnant.
It does not serve to cure our frustrations, for this there are psychologists, a little more expensive but certainly better therapy.
It does not serve for anybody wanting to get rich at the cost of the animals.
It does not serve to satisfy your need of prominence and importance
It does not serve to satisfy our need of power, power over what? Some poor animals and poor volunteers that think you are the big saviour of animals; a sad thing if somebody gets involved in animals rescue because of that reason and believe me there are a lot of people like that and I know many of them.
It does not serve to make animal abandonment easier by picking up unwanted animals without a problem; this would only be just another version of abandonment.
It does not serve as a dumping ground for galgueros and hunters who want to get rid of their dogs and I don’t want any emotional blackmail that if we don’t they will have to kill then, because what they need to do is to uphold the laws and all these animals are subject to the laws.
It does not serve as a pickup service, for the official authorities are abusing the love of animals that we people have so they don’t have to pay at all or not enough for the service of picking up the abandoned animals for them, leaving it all to us.
It does not serve as a free veterinary service because you “just don’t feel like paying for it”.
It does not serve as a collection service of your animals when you go on holidays, this is called a holiday home for dogs, not a refuge.
It does not serve as an escape to forget about those animals that will never be able to find an adoption home and you leave them there because you don’t want to take the responsibility of having to put them to sleep painlessly.
Dear reader, check that your refuge does not serve for these things.
Loving kisses and hugs and licks and purrs from the dogs.. Fermin
